#18. LYNCHBURG - 1936 Lynchburg 5-Coin Distribution Holder. This is a Very Scarce variety - it is stamped "WATKINS COIN COMPANY - P. O. Hoffecker did not originally distribute these coins - the Lynchburg Sesquicentennial Association did but Hoffecker did re-sell the remaining coins that he could purchase. #19. LYNCHBURG - 1936 Lynchburg 5-Coin Distribution Holder and delivery envelope. Very unusual in that this envelope is addressed to a Doctor in Washington, DC, yet it was NOT mailed as no stamps or postmarks are present. I would theorize that this Doctor ordered the coins but may have picked them up at the Sesquicentennial celebrations in Lynchburg, VA himself. As the coins were minted and delivered in time for the local celebration, that is a likely hypothesis. Great condition on both the holder and the delivery envelope! Very unusual.

These cards were also sent to those people who expressed interest in the Norfolk Half Dollar. Those were sent by the Norfolk Coin Commission. A rare coin item!

#28. NORFOLK - 1936 Norfolk Commemorative Half Dollar Broadside (Large Size 8.5" x 14")! This is a VERY unusual item in that it discusses the fact that the Norfolk Commemorative Half Dollar bill passed in the Senate but was amended in the House to become a MEDAL!!!! Virginia Senator Carter Glass went to work on President Roosevelt pleading with him to sign a COIN and not a MEDAL bill! Roosevelt promised Glass that he would sign a coin bill if Congress passed one and Glass proposed one in January of 1937. This broadside was sent to Norfolk Coin supporters to get them to contact the House
Committee to get them to support a half dollar for Norfolk. There was strong opposition (including President Roosevelt) for more commemorative coins but supporters sought to have Congress make an exception for Norfolk. Through their diligent efforts, they were successful! This is a wonderful and RARE piece of Norfolk Commemorative coinage history. Written by H. Waverly Johnson (Numismatist) from Norfolk, VA, with the notation "NOT FOR PUBLICATION!!! I doubt that many (any?) others still exist!

Hewitt was the published and owner of the Numismatic Scrapbook magazine, the MOST influential numismatic publication of its day. Hewitt was an out-spoken critic of new commemorative coin issues. For example, he took exception, in his
Numismatic Scrapbook magazine, with Thomas Melish of Cleveland, being the distributor of the Cincinnati Commemorative Half Dollars. Hewitt often spoke out about the greed motive that inspired many issues of commemorative coins being minted that were not worthy of commemoration. Hewitt's influence on the numismatic world during the 1930's to 1950's cannot be easily matched by anyone! This card, measures 3.25" x 5.5" in size.
